Discover Bhoothathankettu Dam: A Serene Getaway Near Kochi with History, Nature, and Adventure

Nestled about 60 kilometers from the bustling city of Kochi, Bhoothathankettu Dam is a perfect escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. This scenic destination, surrounded by lush greenery, towering trees, and the serene Periyar River, offers a peaceful retreat from urban life.

On a recent visit, I explored this hidden gem, capturing some breathtaking views, fascinating wildlife, and, of course, the majestic dam itself. In this blog, I'll walk you through the experience, share some of the history and legends behind Bhoothathankettu, and provide tips for anyone planning to visit.

The Scenic Drive to Bhoothathankettu

The journey to Bhoothathankettu from Kochi is an experience in itself. As you drive through Kerala’s lush countryside, the landscapes become increasingly greener and quieter. The road is bordered by dense forests, and we were even greeted by playful monkeys along the way, adding to the charm of the trip. These little creatures can often be seen on the roadside, seemingly curious about the visitors making their way to the dam.

As we approached the dam, the cool breeze and fresh air made it clear we were in for a peaceful day of exploration.

The Legend of Bhoothathankettu: 'Fort of Ghosts'

Bhoothathankettu, which translates to “Fort of Ghosts” in Malayalam, has an intriguing story tied to its name. According to local legend, demons or ‘Bhoothams’ attempted to flood the nearby village of Thrissur by blocking the Periyar River with massive boulders. However, they were outwitted by clever humans, and the construction was left incomplete. The remnants of these boulders can still be seen today, adding a layer of mystery to this serene location.

The dam that now stands here is an engineering marvel, serving as a vital water source for irrigation and drinking water for nearby areas.

The Dam and the Gushing Waters

One of the most captivating sights during our visit was the dam itself. At the time, only two shutters were open, allowing water to gush forcefully into the Periyar River below. The sheer power of the water was mesmerizing, and you could feel the energy in the air as it roared through the dam.

For those who don’t know, the shutters of Bhoothathankettu Dam are fully opened only when the reservoir reaches its maximum capacity, typically during Kerala’s intense monsoon rains. During our visit, we witnessed just a glimpse of what this dam can do, but it was impressive nonetheless.

A Walk Through Nature

Bhoothathankettu is more than just a dam—it’s a sanctuary of natural beauty. The reservoir on one side is a calm, expansive body of water, mirroring the sky and the surrounding greenery. On the other side, the dense forest seems almost untouched by human hands, creating a peaceful environment that feels far removed from city life.

We strolled along the dam, pausing to take in the panoramic views. It's a fantastic place to unwind, take pictures, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to appreciate, as the area is home to a variety of bird species.

The Watchtower: Currently Closed but Still Worth a Look

While exploring the area, we came across a watchtower that offers stunning views of the dam and the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately, the tower was closed for maintenance during our visit. However, it’s worth keeping an eye out for future updates as this spot is known for offering a bird’s-eye view of the area that would add another layer to your visit.

Other Amenities at Bhoothathankettu

If you're visiting with family, there are plenty of facilities to make your trip more enjoyable. There’s a well-maintained children’s park nearby, along with picnic spots where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings. After exploring the dam, we treated ourselves to some local snacks from the food stalls near the entrance. The variety of traditional Kerala snacks available is perfect for satisfying hunger after a day of adventure.

Tips for Visitors: What You Should Know

  • Best Time to Visit: Bhoothathankettu is beautiful year-round, but the monsoon season (June to September) is when the dam is most likely to be at full capacity, and all the shutters are opened. However, even during the dry season, the scenic beauty is worth the trip.

  • Getting There: The dam is located about 60 km from Kochi, and the drive takes roughly 1.5 hours. Public transport options are available, but driving your own vehicle or hiring a taxi will make the trip more convenient.

  • What to Bring: Comfortable shoes for walking, a camera for capturing the stunning views, and sunscreen or a hat for sunny days. If you're planning to trek through the forested trails, carry water and light snacks.

Conclusion

Bhoothathankettu Dam is more than just a water reservoir—it's a serene escape into nature with a sprinkle of myth and legend. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to unwind, Bhoothathankettu has something for everyone. Our visit was a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility, and I can't wait to go back.
