The backwaters of Alappuzha is the venue of the impressive Nehru Trophy
Boat Race. Elation and enthusiasm fill the air. Splendidly decorated Chundan Vallams, with raised stems resembling the hood of a cobra slit the calm backwaters powered by more than 150 oar men. Other than Chundan, Veppu Vallams (Parunthuvalans), Oadis or Iruttukuthies also compete in this boat race or Vallamkali (വള്ളംകളി). Champakulam chundan snake boat paddled by the Kollam Jesus Boat Club inched past the Payipad chundan
to win the 57th Nehru Trophy Boat Race in a thrilling final on the
Punnamada Lake, Alapuzzha. Captained by Jiji Jacob Pollayil, this is
Kollam Jesus boat club's second consecutive victory in Nehru Trophy Boat
Race. Earlier the event was formerly inaugurated by UPA chairperson and
Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Kerala Tourism Minister Kodiyeri
Balakrishnan gave away the prizes to the winners. Here are some images
